LCHS Welding Class and Abbey Centre Partner for Heartfelt Community Project
Lacombe high school students are leading the way to create a monument to loved ones and special moments for the community of Blackfalds.
In 2022, Carol Simpson, general manager of the Abbey Centre in Blackfalds, reached out to explore a potential collaboration between the town and the École Secondaire Lacombe Composite High School (LCHS) welding class. Simpson had a vision for a community project but no detailed drawings—just some inspirational pictures. Through numerous discussions and meetings, the project received the green light, and work began during the 2023/24 school year.
The LCHS welding program partnered with Comet Welding, a local Lacombe welding shop, to bring the concept to life. Comet Welding generously donated materials and handled the forming of two heart-shaped structures. These materials were then taken to LCHS, where the welding students, under the guidance of their teacher, Steven Prediger, cut, fit, and welded the final piece.
“This project has been a real testament to the students’ dedication and skill. It’s not often that high school students get the chance to work on something that will be a permanent part of their community, and they really rose to the occasion. From the initial concept to the final welds, they took pride in every step,” said Prediger.
One Grade 12 student led the project, taking on a significant portion of the work, with support from four classmates and Prediger. The heart structure, designed to be a permanent installation, provides a space for visitors to place locks in memory of loved ones, pets, or significant moments—similar to the tradition on France’s famous love-lock bridge — The Pont des Arts.
“One of the things I’m most proud of is how the students worked together and supported each other. This wasn’t just an exercise in welding; it was an exercise in teamwork and problem-solving. It’s projects like these that show students what they’re truly capable of,” said Prediger.
This collaborative project has offered LCHS welding students the opportunity to showcase their skills outside the classroom, applying what they’ve learned in a real-world setting.
The heart sculpture not only serves as a beautiful addition to the community but also stands as an example of what can be achieved through teamwork and partnerships.
“We are so appreciative of all the collaboration that had to happen to see this project come to completion. So much credit goes to Steve Prediger, the students of LCHS and Comet Welding for embracing this idea and giving it life,” said Simpson. “The heart is a constant reminder to all those who see it that love is powerful and timeless.”
To further support and sustain the project, the Heart of Blackfalds Society, a newly formed non-profit organization, has joined as a sponsor. Their mission to promote kindness and love through thoughtful action aligns perfectly with the message of the Love Locks Heart. In partnership with the Heart of Blackfalds Society, locks and hearts for the monument are now available for purchase online, giving community members a meaningful way to participate in this lasting symbol of love and connection.
